May 2015 Presidents Report

April just flew by, and what a month ….
If you missed the club night at Smart Marine, then you really missed a great night. Smart Marine put on a BBQ and drinks, then offered extra discount deals on top of the SmartMarine Card discount, on everything in store. Those who attended took advantage and stocked up on all sorts of  bits and pieces.  Thanks to Josh, Scott and Staff.
Next up was the Wave Dancer and Catch Lures Seminar. Guest speakers Grant and Kristy did a great job keeping everyone wanting to know more. “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” was the theme for the night and to understand its meaning – you had to be there.
Grant pulled out his boat chart and showed his fishing spots, then covered understanding the fish sounder, providing print outs for everyone to take home. The demo on the Catch Lures, how they  worked and how to get the best out of them, was brilliant. Then Grant gave away the lure if you could explain what he just told us. It was a night of information and giveaways.

Just when you thought it was over, Grant gave a lucky person a seat onboard Wave Dancer. The winner was someone that has given so much to the club tournaments, the organiser of the Simrad Raglan One Base……. Mark Olsen. Enjoy Mark, you deserve it.

To complete the evening Joe Johnson was there, so he was presented with his Life Membership Certificate.  A very happy and humble man – Joe has just the spot to hang his certificate, opposite his wife Coral’s 27lb snapper.

Anzac Weekend had the Big 4 tournament Three days of fishing anywhere in New Zealand, as long as you were in the line by 4pm on Monday. The tournament was a huge success. Total number of entries was 80 anglers.  10 small fry, 9 juniors, 14 women and 47 men. Making the Big 4  Tournament, our second biggest tournament this season.

Burnsco sponsored the Small Fry and Junior prize pool. Three club members, Denise Higgs, Annette Court and Kathryn Bright took on the job of getting the women’s prize pool. And what a great section of prizes. Thanks to,  Ladedas Hair Salon, the Scented Soap Deli, Donovan’s
Chocolate, New Dehli India Restaurant, Sugar Bowl Café, and Digicable for increasing your sponsorship and also providing women’s dress watches. Capped off with Ridgeline clothing, we had some very happy women.
Men had a good section of prizes also. The 5  x $100 cash spot prizes were won by 2 juniors, 1 women, and 2 men.  Great to see them going over all categories.
The Average Weight Snapper was won by Todd Kerr with a 1.914kg fish. No angler caught all 4 species so the trophy was put back in the cabinet until next year and the prizes were drawn:
– Cory Hartgill  3rd – $100 TDO Bar and Restaurant voucher and a Kings Marine service voucher
– Paula Hirst  2nd –  2 nights accommodation at Oamaru Bay Holiday Park and a Kings Marine service voucher
– Roddy Anderson 1st  – tablet and keypad and a King Marine service voucher.

A huge thanks to all our Sponsors and Anglers without you, we wouldn’t have a competition.
Next Club Night – Tuesday, 19th May is Bruce McKenzie on Papua New Guinea Guided Fishing Tours, see you  there.
The AGM is our next major event in August. We still need someone to take over the Catch Card Officer’s position next season, if you would like to take on this position, please let the Committee know. On that note, the committee always welcomes new committee members and ideas.

Cheers, Roger
