The Fish City Big Four Fishing Tournament 2016

This annual fishing competition was held over Anzac Weekend 23 – 25 April 2016, with the headline sponsor Fish City. The tournament is hosted and organized by the Waikato Sport Fishing Club. (WSFC). This is an all ports, fish anywhere in NZ  tournament and you only have to be in the weigh in line by 4pm on the Monday in Hamilton with either your catch or your catch cards. This gives plenty of time to fish wherever you like  from 1am Saturday to say lunch time Monday.

WSFC encourages sustainable fishing thus anglers are limited to 2 snapper, 1 Kingfish, 1 Kahawai and 1 Trevally for weigh in.

A record number of entries were received this year, 108 anglers with a mixture of men, women, juniors and small fry. We had entrants from Whakatane, Thames and other sport fishing clubs, as well as non club members.

This allowed for a prize pool of over $20,000 to be up for grabs.

This year we thought outside the square and in conjunction with Ross, Haidee and Kevin from Fish City added a bit more spark to the Big Four Concept. The Big  Four has historically been about catching a Snapper, Kingfish, Trevally and Kahawai “The Big Four” and the heaviest combined bag weight won the Big Four prizes and trophy. Traditionally few Big four bags have been weighed in however this year there were 12 anglers who achieved this feat.

For this year’s tournament Fish City put up for grabs a FC430 boat, 40hp fourstroke outboard and trailer as the “Super” Big Four prize package with a retail value of $25,000. The additional challenge here was minimum weights were required: Kingfish 20kgs, Snapper 10kgs, Trevally 3kgs and Kahawai 3kgs.

Unfortunately the Super big four was not struck this year, however it sparked some great interest in the tournament and several anglers put in the miles to try and complete the super bag. The largest weights achieved for the tournament were :

Snapper   6.58kgs
Kingfish  19.58kgs
Trevally   4.47kgs
Kahawai  2.69kgs

Thus over 3 days, anywhere in NZ, we  think the super prize is achievable.

This year due to the higher entry numbers the prizegiving was moved from the WSFC clubrooms on Grantham Street to the Hamilton Marist Rugby Club. A great roast meal (included in the ticket price) was served at 5pm and prizegiving commenced at 6pm.

This year we also had MC Mark Bunting from “The Breeze Radio Station” run the prizegiving in conjunction with our president Roger Bright. Between the two of them they had the crowd in stitches, it was an entertaining and relaxed prizegiving.
