Current Lines January 2019 #2

– by Paul Batten

Baby, I’m tired of toeing the line”. Whoa who said that, I haven’t even got a line wet! Huh wishful thinking I think not!

WOW !! What a start to the 2019 Whangarei Deep Sea Anglers Club’s tournament season! A grand total of 75 Junior and Small Fry anglers joined the Arthurs Emporium Tutukaka Junior Tournament on 12th & 13th January.  Boy did the Kids show us all how it’s done – with new records galore; and an awesome overall tally of 5 tagged Yellowtail Kingfish, 15 tagged Shark (including 1 Bronzewhaler, 3 Blue and 11 Mako Shark), 6 Shortbill Spearfish, 2 landed Striped Marlin, 2 tagged Striped Marlin and 2 landed Blue Marlin;  not to mention the “drops” and the fish that unfortunately did not qualify for the tournament.

FANTASTIC EFFORT!! Congratulations to Madison Ross!! Fishing on GPS in the Arthurs Emporium Tutukaka Junior Tournament; Madison landed a mighty Blue Marlin weighing in at 302kg on just 15kg line – a pending Junior Club, NZ & World Record and a pending Women’s World record fish. Madison took home an Apple Iphone8+ so kindly donated by Arthurs Emporium and was also awarded the Barbara & Fred Cotterill Trophy for the most meritorious catch!! Awesome effort Madi!

Well done to Kurtis Bot in the Arthurs Emporium Tutukaka Junior Tournament. Fishing on GPS; Kurtis landed a nice 97kg Striped marlin and a Shortbill Spearfish weighing in at 17.8kg – a pending Junior Club record on 15kg line. The tag and release Marlin section was won jointly by Junior Anglers Jacob Lowther fishing on Ngaio and Layne Collinson on Ikanui – each tagging one Striped Marlin.

Mercury Bay Game Fishing Club  Some very excited guys on vessel Hook Em Up. Congratulations on your amazing fish. Angler Daniel Kelly fishing aboard the “Hook Em Up” hooked a big eye tuna weighing 73.66kg caught on 37kg line.  Also Congratulations to Nathanael Brown on his pending Junior Record for club and NZ.  He caught an Albacore weighing in at 13.01kg caught on 37kg line aboard the “Seaquil.

Counties Sport Fishing Club  Well done to Kelly Littlewood, 16 kg shortbill north of cape Brett

Bay of Islands Swordfish Club (Inc) Congratulations to angler Ian and the Hook n Bull team – 312kg!

Whakatane Sport Fishing Club N.Z  A nice 24kg Shortbill Spearfish was caught on the 28th December, angler Dennis Davey aboard his boat L.A. caught in Sponsors Grid Simplex Electrical. Congrats Dennis.

Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club (Inc) A striped marlin has just been boated by Kuri II who are also in the DTF Lures marlin jackpot. Ann Candy has weighed in a striped marlin of 99kg from Kuri II. She has won the DTF Lures Marlin Jackpot. She used a Ghost lure at the Garden Patch and the fish struck three times before it stuck! Brian and Ann report 22 degrees water out there, but no skippies, but they did see a huge manta ray. There will be a presentation for them at the clubrooms at 7pm on Friday evening.

Mount Maunganui, Good fishing recently for large snapper and trevally on the light line classes, bodes well for the Nationals in 8 weeks’ time. Recent trevally record claim by Hayden Speed with a magnificent 4.866kg fish caught on 8kg line, 60.8 points if caught in the nationals. Dad, not to be shown up, caught his 5.546kg trevally on 6kg line, 92.43 points and possibly a line class champion for both anglers.

Clevedon Game Fishing Club – Anne Sharples, a staunch member of the Clevedon Game Fishing Club went out and smashed their club record by weighing her 10.30kg snapper caught on 2kg line.  This is also a pending NZ record line class claim. This fish would have scored in the Nationals 515 points and a possible line class champion, interclub snapper trophy, big kudos for the angler, team and club.  Well done Anne.

Reminder Tag card report – please include the entire alpha-numeric sequence to aid recording, e.g. H12345

Hokianga Big Game and Sports Fishing Club Inc  Just so all our members know the Opononi Garage has now re opened under new owners and the fuel is way cheaper than before.

News from Houhora – Love it or hate it – the gate is up, and it is already proving an asset for those boaties launching and retrieving at the club jetty. For those heading up this way for the holidays, you will need GOLD coins. Cost $5 per launch & $5 per retrieval, No eftpos available! · To pick up tag please contact the club, 09 4097 7755 or email: fish.houhora@xtra.co.nz. Casual users: Will need to insert $5 in coins to open the barrier arm, no change is given. (Gold coins only) There is no charge to exit the ramp and wharf area, the arm will open automatically when leaving these areas. BE AWARE SECURITY CAMERAS ARE IN OPERATION AT ALL TIMES.

2019 sees the running of the 47th NZSFC NATIONALS, (the last international was 1972 with this event morphing into the Nationals that we know today); the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council National Tournament, which starts on the 16th of February and ends on the 23rd of February 2019.  Entry forms and rules are available on the NZSFC webpage.  Just click the following link

www.nzsportfishing.co.nz/our-events/2019-nationals

The Tournament runs a point system which gives anglers the opportunity to fish for line weight records and tag and release. The tournament starts with most anglers registering and attending a briefing at their Clubs before the tournament, then they’re off with some choosing to do multiple day trips in trailer boats from various ports depending on the results available each evening, while larger boats will disappear for up to the entire eight days until they have a fish to weigh. Anglers of all ages fish hard for 8 days for 32 National Trophies for teams and individual anglers. Mate versus mate, team versus team and club against club. It’s an amazing week of Fishing in New Zealand which results in some outstanding captures and New Zealand records.

A reminder from MPI Fisheries a ban on gathering shell fish in the Bay of Islands in the area from Cape Brett to Cape Wikiwiki to the north, and we issued a public health warning advising the public not to collect or consume shellfish harvested from parts of Northland. That area has now been extended. The warning is now in place from North Cape (Outo), down to Cape Karikari (Whakapouaka). It includes Parengarenga, Houhoura and Rangaunu Harbours. Routine tests on shellfish samples taken from this region have shown levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) toxins above the safe limit of 0.8 mg/kg set by MPI. Anyone eating shellfish from this area is potentially at risk of illness. For more information, visit our website: www.mpi.govt.nz/travel-and-re…/…/shellfish-biotoxin-alerts/…

Fishing Reports

Raglan: This month has seen the numbers of kingfish heating up, The northern reefs have had better sized kingys than normal, The charter operators out from kawhia are also getting onto good numbers at gannet, Winter snapper fishing is going great over the sand in 38-57mts The cooler water brings the fat gurnard on the bite.

Coro/Firth of Thames: Many reports of the farms fishing well not to hard to find the schooling fish and fill the bin up for dinner, the northern Coro farms are producing some nice fat fish between 4-6kg, Kingfish are hunting the edges for baitfish, stickbaiting the rockedges or a livebait presented in the upper harbours is not a silly idea,.

Game Fishing Reports: There are reports of late season marlin around mayor island, Tauranga Club have weighed some impressive Sword fish and many catch and release fish from the eastern knolls, On the sword fish topic the west coast is also firing, Two caught at Mokau Trench last weekend!

Fishing Reports

Raglan:

Fishing has been steady out west this month, plenty of options for every style of fishing, The boats heading to the Mokau trench are doing well, lots of hapuka / bluenose landed and a 227kg broadbill caught in late march here. the kingfish fishing has slowed with the odd day being hard to get them on the bite but others having great success on certain days, Snapper are in abundance at the 35-40mtr mark but also some great session are being had at around 10-15mtr with bigger fish coming in here it can just be a bit harder to get onto them.

Coro / Firth of Thames

This time of year is best to chase the kingfish. berly up and they will soon be around the boat, I find they are easiest to get around the boat in the farms then unhook your hook and float out to clearer ground before deploying livebaits, this give you much less chance of a bust off, Snapper are loving soft plastics this month with the brown/yellow colours being the choice of the month.

Game Fishing Report

The fishing has finally heated up around and inside mayor island, some great marlin being caught, to date most have been east or north of the aldies or down towards waihau bay, its good to see they have turned up in this middle ground. Livebaits deployed on the edges of baitballs has been very effective in hooking these in close marlin. West coast has been steady, we are starting to see a drop in water Temp which has caused the bite to slow a bit but stil lsome good fish caught down towards Kawhia.

Fishing Reports

Raglan:

Good numbers of kingfish at 21, 23 and Gannet island, Mainly rats this time of year but the earlier / change of light time has been producing some good legal fish. Livebaits are also bringing in the bigger fish, Jigging is good fun and practice with the rats hard to miss, Snapper fishing has had mixed reports, the fish don’t seem to be on the move, anywhere from 30-60mtr is filling the bin up, patience is needed as they are not always on the bite straight away. some nice size snapper are being caught at Gannet stay-lining over the structure. Mahimahi have arrived from 60M out, if you see them jumping around a small stickbait or softbait will do the damage, great fun on the lighter gear, Be careful handling these fish in the boat they are known to jump around and cause a few injury’s.

Firth / Coromandel Report

The farms are fishing well over the past weeks, Remember the big snapper are feeding on mussels so its not silly to stop in at pak n save to grab some fresh ones for bait or grab a few off the buoys (yes these don’t get harvested by the commercial boats, Public welcome to grab them) Make sure you take some elastic cotton to hold them on the hook and stray line them down the burley trail, Great time of year to chase the large snapper around the coast towards Port Jackson and Fletcher bay, Plently of burley plus change of light and you migh just pick out that 20lb coro horse snapper.

Game Fishing Report

The Billfish have been consistent from Whitianga to Waihau bay plenty of 100kg strip Marlin caught from 100mtr out. the change of tide has been a good bite time for this coast, the Odd blue marlin showing up also with a few good ones weighed in at Tauranga. The mighty west coast is fishing great and has us all very excited for One-base, Good patches of bait hanging around 80m south of raglan with multible boats hooking up in this area, More action around the 120m mark also, The light blue/ silver natural coloured lures have been popular along with the Pakula Lumo Sprocket. Trolling livebaits at around 1-3 knots around the bait schools is also a great way to raise a fish, match with bait with the feed is never a silly idea.

Thomson’s ITM Raglan One Base Briefing

As required by our Tournament Safety plan Attendance at the Thomson’s ITM One Base Tournament Briefing on Wednesday 14th March 7pm at Raglan Club Inc is COMPULSORY and NO TEAM can compete in the tournament until the skipper or a team member has attended the briefing. Phone Roger Bright  (027 490 2771) or Russell Court (027 395 5833) for an exemption if required.

Fishing Reports

Raglan: The weather has been great at late with a good amount of calm days able to head out over the bar for a days fishing, the warm weather has been heating the water up with reports of water temp up to 26 degrees! Togs and Towel are on the list of things to pack, With this warm temp the kingfish fishing has been dynamite off west, 21, 23 reefs having plenty of action along with Gannet island on jigs and livebaits, Jackson’s reef has been producing some awesome kingfish on topwater lures and livebaits with exciting take on the surface. Plenty of skippys from 55mtr out so good chance to fill the freezer with bait or an albacore for the table. If your rocking the 12ft kiwi Tinny the snapper fishing up the upper Raglan harbour is red hot this time of year, Match the change of light with the tide change, burley and the snapper wont be able to resist your strayline bait!

Firth of Thames / Coro: The coast road has taken a hammering but with another bandaid fix/patch we have access with not too long of a wait to some good fishing grounds, The kawawai workups are hard to miss and commonly driven past in search for snapper, These schools are awesome fun to chase with lightweight gear and a great opportunity to claim a light line class club record! keep an eye on these workups as kingfish are commonly circling the edges, if a workup has been in the same spot for a while and not moving around much this gives the snapper a chance to get underneath them and vacuum up all the falling scraps, Good place to drop a bait on a heavy sinker or a heavy weighted slow jig, The snapper are settling into the farms and its not hard to fill the bin with some good pannies for the table, Its the time of year that if your not getting much in 20mins its worth moving around until you find them, Using your sounder can help reducing your time finding them.

Game Fishing Report: The season is well underway with some impressive fish caught all over the country, We have had a good run of yellowfin out wide on the eastcoast 500m plus, good numbers of healthy stripy’s have been caught from 100m mark from Whitianga to Waihau bay, Lures seem to favor the season start with livebaits heating up later in the season. Not to forget the West coast Raglan has the largest Marlin every to be weighed in Mid January, A Large Blue tipping the scales at 348kg! The Manakau boys have had a short run of stripys and the south west New Plymouth region is starting to fire up! We are really looking forward to our raglan Onebase compin march, Kawhia have had a consistent number of catches and are hosting their Onebase Comp this weekend 8-10 Feb.
